Under contract to the Office of Naval Research, Hodgdon Defense Composites has developed the Mk V.1 High-Speed Composite Craft. An 83 ft technology demonstrator, the Mk V.1 - nicknamed MAKO - was developed to showcase the ability of high-performance composites to absorb the shock of wave impacts. Launched on January 11, 2008, MAKO will be delivered to the US Navy for field testing in February 2008. Initial builder's trials indicate that MAKO meets or exceeds the basic performance requirements in terms of operating speed, weight, capacity, and range. Field testing by the Navy will confirm whether MAKO meets the shock-mitigation requirements.
