Hodgdon Defense Composites LLC (HDC), formerly known as Maine Marine Manufacturing, was founded in 2004 by Hodgdon Yachts to be the company's commercial entity for military construction. Subsequently, HDC, in collaboration with Hodgdon Yachts and the University of Maine, secured a contract with the US Office of Naval Research to construct the MAKO technology demonstrator. HDC has since developed multiple new military boat designs utilizing advanced composites and construction techniques to optimize ship strength and weight.
