Hodgdon Defense Composites LLC, (Hodgdon Defense Composites), was founded in 2004, by Hodgdon Yachts to be the company's commercial entity for military construction. Subsequently, Hodgdon Defense Composites, in collaboration with Hodgdon Yachts and the University of Maine, secured a contract with the US Office of Naval Research to construct the MAKO technology demonstrator. MAKO was designed to deliver a significantly improved ride utilizing composite construction, shock mitigation techniques and an improved hull design. MAKO was launched on January 11, 2008, and after Builder's Trials it is scheduled to be tested by NAVSEA Combatant Craft and USSOCOM in head-to-head trials with the existing MK V.
